Marchants.Co was founded by Alex Bensley, who has worked in the catering industry for many years, firstly as a trained chef and then as a very successful restaurateur.
One of the first and most important things he learned was ‘a dish is only as good as it’s ingredients – quality is key’, and it is this that he has always kept in mind ever since. After buying his first restaurant, it soon acquired a great reputation and became incredibly popular, this then allowed him to expand the business further by buying more run-down restaurants, trading them up and eventually selling them on, normally to PLCs. He sold his last hugely successful group of four gastro pubs and a two Rosette fine dining restaurant in 2016.
During this time he realised that one of the key factors in the success of these businesses was being able to offer superb quality meat, so to ensure he was always able to do this he decided to buy a long established, award winning artisan butchers business in the heart of Kent, consisting of a lovely village based butcher’s shop and substantial cutting rooms. With a fantastic team of highly qualified traditional butchers, not only was he able to supply his own restaurants, but many others including top end steak houses, Michelin starred restaurants and quality gastro pubs.
Having expanded and beautifully refurbished the butcher’s shop – Marchants of Bethersden - many of the thousands of weekly customers to his restaurants also became frequent customers there.
Noticing that people were travelling from much further afield to visit the shop, and the fleet of refrigerated vans was having to travel a lot further to fulfil orders, it seemed the next logical step was to go online and so Marchants.Co was born!
In 2019 the manager who opened the shop and ran the business since day one, Paul Webb, became the owner.
